The transition away from chemical flocculants: Commercially viable harvesting of Phaeodactylum tricornutum

نویسندگان

چکیده

Harvesting can contribute up to 15% of the total production cost for microalgal biomanufacturing. Using flocculants is potentially a cost-effective approach but there has been considerable debate on efficacy, cost, toxicity cell and environment, effect biomass further downstream. In this study, range biobased (chitosan from crab shells, Moringa oleifera seed extract, pectin bananas, tannic acid-based derivatives Acacia tree bark egg shell powder) were compared with traditional chemical (aluminium sulphate, iron chloride sodium hydroxide) harvesting diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum. It was concluded that Tanac’s tannin based Tanfloc 8025 (SL range) most promising, requiring low concentration (10.4 kg ton?1 biomass), at ($27.04 biomass). The flocculant effective over wide pH (7.5–10.0) temperature (15–28 °C) (>85% efficiency) occurred in 10 mins, which resulted factor ? 5.69.

Genome properties of the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum.

Diatoms are a ubiquitous class of microalgae of extreme importance for global primary productivity and for the biogeochemical cycling of minerals such as silica. However, very little is known about diatom cell biology or about their genome structure. For diatom researchers to take advantage of genomics and post-genomics technologies, it is necessary to establish a model diatom species. Phaeodac...

Light-Harvesting Function in the Diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum: II. Distribution of Excitation Energy between the Photosystems.

The distribution of excitation energy between photosystems I and II (PSI and PSII) was investigated in the marine diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum (Bohlin) using light-induced changes in fluorescence yield and rate of modulated O(2) evolution. The intensity dependence of the fast fluorescence rise in dark adapted cells (+/-DCMU) suggests that light absorbed by the major antenna complex was not ...

Apoptosis-inducing galactolipids from a cultured marine diatom, Phaeodactylum tricornutum.

Two monogalactosyl diacylglycerols, 1 and 2, were isolated from the marine diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum, using the patented ApopScreen cell-based screen for apoptosis-inducing, potential anticancer compounds. The molecular structures of the galactolipids were determined using a combination of NMR, mass spectrometry, and chemical degradation. The bioactivities were confirmed using a specific...

Regulation of the Calvin cycle in the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum

IV Regulation of the Calvin cycle in the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum Phaeodactylum tricornutum is an important model organism for diatoms, one of the prevalent phytoplankton on earth. Diatoms are unicellular, eukaryotic and photoautotrophic microalgae, which contribute greatly to the global carbon cycle efficiently transforming CO2 into carbon compounds via the Calvin cycle pathway. There ...

Dynamics of the bacterial community associated with Phaeodactylum tricornutum cultures

The pennate diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum is a model organism able to synthesize industrially-relevant molecules. Commercial-scale cultivation currently requires large monocultures, prone to bio-contamination. However, little is known about the identity of the invading organisms. To reduce the complexity of natural systems, we systematically investigated the microbiome of non-axenic P. trico...
